Following my international teaching experience, I joined Create Career College in Burnaby, British Columbia, as a Graphic Design Instructor. Over a continuous 7-month full-time program, I supported adult learners transitioning into new careers within the creative industry.
This program was designed for individuals affected by unemployment or seeking a professional shift toward graphic design and digital media careers. My role focused on providing both technical training and professional guidance to help students build the skills and confidence required to enter the job market as emerging designers.
Teaching Context
Unlike traditional academic environments, this program focused on accelerated, career-oriented learning. Students came from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds, requiring a flexible and supportive teaching approach tailored to different levels of digital literacy and prior experience.
The objective was to guide students through a structured learning path that would prepare them for entry-level roles in the creative industry.
Curriculum Coverage
Throughout the program, I delivered hands-on instruction across a wide range of topics, including:
- Computer literacy and digital fundamentals
- Introduction to graphic design principles
- Adobe Creative Suite software training
- Visual communication and layout composition
- Typography and branding basics
- Practical design project development
- Introductory business and freelancing concepts for designers, between others.
Each subject was taught through practical exercises, real-world examples, and project-based learning.
Teaching Methodology
My approach combined structured technical instruction with applied learning. Students were encouraged to develop portfolio-ready projects while learning industry-standard workflows and tools.
