From 2016 to 2019, I worked as a Digital Design Teacher at The British International School in Barranquilla, Colombia, delivering project-based learning within the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). My role focused on guiding students through the creative process while developing their technical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills in digital design.
Teaching Approach
My teaching methodology was centered on inquiry-based learning and design thinking. Students were encouraged to explore real-world problems, research solutions, and develop creative outcomes through iterative design processes.
The objective was not only to teach technical tools, but to help students understand how design can communicate ideas, solve problems, and create meaningful user experiences.
Student Projects
Throughout the academic years, students developed a wide range of digital and print-based projects, including:
- Website design and development projects
- 3D modeling and digital visualization
- Printed publications and editorial design
- Online magazines and digital storytelling platforms
Each project followed a structured design cycle, including research, ideation, prototyping, development, and final presentation.
Skills Development
Students were introduced to a variety of digital tools and design principles, learning how to apply them in both creative and functional contexts. Emphasis was placed on visual communication, layout composition, typography, user experience, and digital literacy.
Beyond technical skills, students developed critical thinking, collaboration, time management, and presentation skills—key competencies within the IB framework.
Role as Educator and Mentor
Beyond instruction, my role involved mentoring students through their creative journey, helping them refine ideas, overcome design challenges, and develop confidence in presenting their work.
I also supported students in connecting design projects to real-world contexts, encouraging them to think critically about audience, purpose, and impact.
Outcome
This teaching experience resulted in highly engaged student participation and the successful completion of diverse digital design projects that reflected both creativity and technical growth.
It also strengthened my ability to communicate complex design concepts in an accessible way, while fostering creativity, independence, and structured thinking in young designers.
This role represents a key part of my professional journey, combining education, digital design, and mentorship within an internationally recognized academic framework.
